WHO THIS PAGE IS FOR

Built for financially independent individuals who want to live abroad on their own terms.

Passive income and digital nomad visas have become some of the most discussed migration pathways of the last five years. The idea is compelling. Move to a country you love, live on income generated elsewhere, and pay no tax in your home country while you do it.

The reality requires careful planning. Income thresholds must be met and documented. The income must come from outside the destination country in most programmes. Employment income from a local employer typically does not qualify. The documentation requirements are more demanding than most guides suggest.

VisaGuide analyses your income sources, your monthly income level and your documentation against the passive income and digital nomad visa requirements in all 16 destination countries. The result tells you which programmes you qualify for today and what would need to change to access the others.

WHAT VISAGUIDE ANALYSES FOR PASSIVE INCOME MIGRATION

The type of income matters as much as the amount.

Income thresholds by country and visa type

Portugal D7 Passive Income Visa requires approximately 760 EUR per month in regular passive income. Portugal Digital Nomad Visa requires 4 times the Portuguese minimum wage, approximately 3,480 EUR per month. Spain Digital Nomad Visa requires demonstrating income above a specific threshold. Germany Freelancer Visa requires proof of sufficient income without a fixed minimum. We check your income level against each country's current requirements.

Income source eligibility

Not all income qualifies for passive income visas. Portugal D7 is designed specifically for passive income such as pensions, rental income, dividends and investment returns. Employment income from a remote job may qualify for a digital nomad visa but not a D7. Freelance income qualifies for some programmes but requires specific business registration in others. We identify which income sources qualify for which programmes.

Income origin requirements

Almost all passive income and digital nomad visa programmes require that your income originates from outside the destination country. If you are a remote worker your employer must be based in a different country from where you want to live. This rules out taking a local job in your destination country while on this type of visa. We flag this requirement clearly because it catches many applicants off guard.

Documentation requirements

Passive income visas require 12 months of bank statements showing regular income deposits, contracts or agreements with foreign employers or clients, business registration documents for self-employed applicants and tax returns from your home country. The documentation burden is significant. We surface exactly what each country requires.

Minimum stay requirements

Some passive income visas require you to actually live in the country to maintain your visa status. Portugal D7 requires you to spend at least 183 days per year in Portugal to maintain the visa and access the non-habitual residence tax regime. Spain requires continuous residence to convert to long-term residence. We flag minimum stay obligations for each programme.

Pathway to permanent residence

Living in a country on a passive income visa can lead to permanent residence and eventually citizenship in most programmes. Portugal D7 holders can apply for permanent residence after 5 years and citizenship after 5 years. Spain permanent residence is available after 5 years. Germany permanent residence requires 5 years of legal residence and language proficiency. We show you the full pathway from initial visa to long-term settlement.

WHAT MOST PASSIVE INCOME VISA APPLICANTS FIND OUT TOO LATE

The passive income visa realities that most guides fail to mention.

Employment income from a remote job and passive income are different things

The Portugal D7 Passive Income Visa is designed for people whose income does not require them to work. A salary from a remote employer is employment income, not passive income. D7 applicants who present a remote employment contract as their income source may find their application questioned or refused. The correct visa for remote workers in Portugal is the Digital Nomad D8, which has a significantly higher income threshold. Understanding this distinction before applying saves significant time and money.

Bank statement requirements are more demanding than most expect

Most passive income and digital nomad visa programmes require a minimum of 12 months of bank statements showing consistent income deposits at or above the threshold. Irregular income, seasonal income or income that varies significantly month to month creates problems at the documentation stage even if the annual average exceeds the threshold. Authorities look for consistency and predictability, not just a high average.

Tax implications require specialist advice before you commit to a destination

Moving to another country on a passive income visa does not automatically resolve your tax obligations in your home country. Many countries tax their citizens on worldwide income regardless of where they live. The non-habitual residence regime in Portugal and the special tax regimes in Spain and UAE offer significant advantages but they require proactive tax planning before you arrive, not after. VisaGuide identifies which countries offer favourable tax treatment for passive income migrants but we strongly recommend consulting a tax adviser before making any financial decisions based on this information.
